The Five Stages of Masculinity February News Roundup

Commentary

At the end of last year I offered an outline for what we might call populist masculinity. This month I have a new article out exploring a different aspect of the phenomena called Populist Masculinity and the Suspension of Order (audio version here). In this article I suggest that populist masculinity benefits from the suspension of standard rules, which I explore via an interpretation of Milo Yiannopoulos’ campus tour, philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s concept of the “state of exception,” and Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s book Antifragile. I argue that masculinity is not in crisis, rather masculinity demands crisis.

I explore a different aspect of populist masculinity in another new article, Conformist Masculinity and the Quest for Freedom (audio version here). In this article I challenge the concept of freedom proposed by the fraternal organization ProudBoys. I argue that, paradoxically, the organization does not encourage freedom, rather conformity. I go on to discuss the concept of freedom in the context of The Five Stages of Masculinity.

These articles contribute towards what I hope will be a more ongoing exploration of populist masculinity that can form a compelling response to these politically volatile times. In the simplest of terms, within the context of The Five Stages of Masculinity, Republicans inhabit Stage 2 while Democrats inhabit Stage 3. What we need is a gender politics that inhabits Stage 4. The resistance to this among progressives is twofold. First, there is a perception that anyone putting the experiences of men on the table is anti-feminist: this is not true, as we’re really talking about expanding feminism to include men. Second, there is a perception that any discussion of gender is a perpetuation of identity politics, which a particular old-school leftist constituency sees as a betrayal of economic justice: this is not true either, as we’re really talking about expanding identity politics to include class.

Without a more nuanced and inclusive gender politics on the table, I fear progressives will double-down on the gender political mistakes that were partly responsible for the rise of Trump in the first place. Several recent articles have suggested that progressives should not compromise by reaching out to “deplorables.” Indeed, progressives should not compromise: reaching out requires building something different together. This is why the solution to the battle between Stage 2 and Stage 3 is not Stage 2.5, rather Stage 4.

The Five Stages of Masculinity Official Certification

A reminder that registration is now open to become officially certified in The Five Stages of Masculinity.

The certification course will be delivered remotely, but participants will work individually with me via email, telephone and Skype. This is not an online course where participants passively watch videos and take simple quizzes.

The course comprises five modules (one for each of the five stages). Participants will receive descriptive worksheets for each module and engage in exercises about how the five stages manifest generally in society and more specifically in participants’ work and lives.

This is the first time that official certification in The Five Stages of Masculinity has been offered, so it is a valuable opportunity to become an early adopter and practitioner of this emerging model, and to become the expert in how The Five Stages of Masculinity is utilized in participants’ professional domains.

Certification will be beneficial for:

  • personal and business coaches
  • counsellors and therapists
  • social and youth workers
  • group facilitators and trainers
  • individuals with an interest in masculinity and personal development.
