Censured by The Indexer

My book 2012: Decoding the Countercultural Apocalypse has been listed in the “Indexes Censured” section of The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing who state, “The index is skimpy, verging on the useless – which is a bit bloody rich given the book’s stupefying price.” I’ll cop to that. But did you know that academic publishers make you write these things yourself, despite the fact that it requires a wholly separate skill set? Because academic publishers are largely too cheap to pay for it despite, as correctly noted, the stupefying price.

  1. Hi Joseph,

As a freelance indexer, I share your frustration! Having an author create the index is a false economy, as the comments in “The Indexer” show. What makes it even more galling is that it is an academic publisher who made you do your own index!

    1. Thanks Graham: I’ll keep you in mind should I need the services in the future. I just finished a new book for Springer, and they appear to be giving the indexing task to a professional, so the system does work in some places 🙂
