Evangelical Darkness

In a new article I have coming out in the next issue of CrossCurrents, I point out that while evangelicalism is no longer the conservative monolith once identified by liberal critics, evangelical men’s ministries nevertheless perform an unfortunate caricature of the worst of the evangelical imagination. Today’s Christian Men’s Network newsletter demonstrates this well. Not only does it celebrate Chuck Norris as an exemplar of manliness, it also goes on to outline its missionary success in “the largest Muslim population on earth—Indonesia” and that they are “making headway into the darkest places on earth.” This kind of language harks back to the height of empire-building where “civilization” was gifted to the Dark Continent and other heathen lands. My advice to liberal evangelicals is this: disown men’s ministry swiftly, or risk losing what credibility you have achieved in the past decade.
